Not having a cable with 500 channels I have not managed to see any of the Star Trek: Remastered that has been showing for the past half year or so. The remastered episodes are replacing all the original shots of ships, space battles, matte shots, and some of the viewscreen contents with new imagery. I have taken a quick look at the main Star Trek website to see what they have to report. Today something I saw there weeks ago connected with the real world.

In Amok Time our crew visited Spock's home planet so he could mate. One other visit to Vulcan was in the animated episode Yesteryear. The animated episode took advantage of the opportunity to depict the landscape around Spock's home town of Shi'Kahr. The remastered version of Spock's wedding created a digital version of the same. The results are depicted here.

Okay, a city in the desert. Nothing new here except for the CGI matte work.

But today I connected with another city in the desert, as seen in (what is currently a strange double exposure) from Google maps.

Look at the layouts of the fictional one and the real one. Who inspired whom?

Yeah, I know, there are only so many shapes possible for a 2-d layout. (It's like there being no point complaining that everything in space is either a sphereoid or a disk, but wow.)
