One of elder daughter's friends had a birthday over the long weekend. The report I elicited indicated this girl had never had a birthday party, or cake, or something similarly incredible. Her cohort planned out an event to remedy the situation.

Despite my discomfort with vampires the fact is that my daughter's friends have been reading the Twilight series of books repeatedly, even monthly. The ostensible plan was for them all to go to the movie. The surprise plan was for them to return and have a party with cake.

Elder daughter took charge of the cake. Never doing it the same way twice, she produced a cake of different shape and magnitude than ever before. She again produced the buttercream frosting herself, but she came to me to ask how to make black frosting.

"A goth cake?" I said.

I convinced her that a black cake probably meant adding too much strange colorant to the frosting. She settled for a twilight blue cake with black lettering and the candles and numerals for 13.

But at this point both daughters are aware that there will always be enough materials in the cupboard to make a cake for any emergency.

Not even my former supervisor is immune from asking me questions that lead directly to [livejournal.com profile] jwz.

I had to prefix my reference to xscreensaver with an admission that I'm a fan, but it's not always an easy thing for someone to hear that he's stuck on technology from the 1980s.
