twittering up the mountain

Today California route 130 has the CHP performing a moving traffic blockade. As is true of many other little state highways, that road was built around 1880 with engineering specifications suitable for horse-drawn wagons. Today there is a fork for a 2.4 meter alt-az telescope heading up the mountain. It should reach the top before dark. When it gets there the mountain webcams will provide views for everyone. Tomorrow a 100-ton crane will lift the fork into the dome. The primary mirror got its vacuum coating last week, and after the telescope is assembled it will be gently lowered into place.
In the mean time, today, there are iPhone updates coming from someone who really ought to be using twitter.
But really, what's exciting about a truck with a big load that risks shearing off mailboxes and phone cables?
I've just learned that the implementor of the existing guide camera software has declined this task.
I haven't implemented a guide system since the days of an array processor on an LSI-11/70.
This should be fun.
