comic books
Mar. 15th, 2009 11:59 pmAlso attached to the Watchmen was the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. After the other X-Men movies it seemed odd to see a young Scott Summers -- not totally in control of his eye beams. But that reminded me of something from an era closer to when all these stories originated.
I'm pretty sure that it was the 1983 San Diego Comic Con where Chris Claremont came to talk about the Marvel comics he was creating. The plots of the recent years had been breathless. During the panel discussion I asked whether any of the characters would get a break, to have some part of their life be an unmolested normal. I do not recall his response. I do recall something from later in the con.
For some reason (I suppose another major speaking appearance) Claremont and an assistant were sitting alone at a table. The passages around them were empty and quiet, and I was walking by. I did not stop, but as I passed I heard Claremont speaking very clearly. He was describing the recurrence of some angst-ridden plot line, some horrible mortal enemy.
I kept track of the comics for a couple of years after that. No such plot ever appeared.
I've had my chain yanked by Chris Claremont.
