kor27 noted flashes in his eyes and followed advice to see an opthamologist. Last night as I closed my eyes I saw flashes. Sleep prevailed, however, until 03:00 when I arose briefly. When I returned to bed again and the same thing happened. Shades of Loo in The Kentucky Fried Movie:

This time, as I contemplatedkor27, sleep did not prevail, but neither did darkness. Soon thereafter I realized that the socket of the 3-way lamp on the dresser, which has long failed and served only as a 1-way lamp, was arcing internally and flickering the light. After a while it decided to arc closed, and the light stayed on. After a while longer of failing to pretend it was dark I got up and turned it off.
