over the horizon radar
Aug. 9th, 2007 10:18 amThe golden eagles have done well this year. It looks as though one pair managed to fledge two chicks. They perched in a tree together calling back and forth with their relatives. Yesterday the fog cleared early and they soared in the morning sky. But the evening was more spectacular.
There are a couple of regions in the meadows which are fenced off. The cows can't graze there, and neither do they get mowed. The corners are supported with 4x4 posts, and sometimes the eagles perch on those. One was doing so yesterday, and as I walked along it took to low flight over the meadow. I watched to see how low it would go over the fence, sidewalk, and road. In much the same fashion as one once buzzed past me (but this time at much greater range) the eagle just cleared the fences on either side of the road. Then it dived.
I waited a couple of minutes, but the eagle did not reappear above the grass. I suspect that meant ground squirrel for supper.
