ice

The smaller containers are frozen through. The huge bucket has ice a centimeter thick.
I wonder what this bodes for the goldfish in the pond across the street.

ice redux

The ice was 1 cm thick at dawn, but after I bunged my knuckles to shatter it for the measurement it refroze. Before I showed it to my elder daughter it had already refrozen.

We decided to trek across to see the carp. The pond is in a warmer place than our back yard, and the waterfall pump had kept it from freezing. But there were no visible carp. The amount of pond scum implies that there hasn't been anything hungry enough to eat in there for a while.

Before I showed the ice to my younger daughter it had refrozen again. The initial ice layer had increased to a full 15 mm thick.
