goodnight sweet Puck

Of the two cats Puck is the dark long-hair tabby. He had many of the characteristics of a Maine Coon, but he never weighed more than 8 pounds. He was approaching his 16th birthday.
Because of the weather this week he had been exhibiting a strong case of ``Door into Summer'' syndrome. On Friday he failed to eat. On Saturday the vet could not be conclusive. Puck came back home and lay where we placed him. This morning the vet called to say kidney failure.
Throughout the day I lay next to Puck, stroked him, and told the stories of his life for him and for my girls. The girls both knew Puck since they weighed the same as he did. We were all there with him at the end.
Puck's companion and mate Emma was also there. She is a bit younger, but I have rehydrated her twice to save her from shutdown. A few weeks back the skin cancer on her nose started growing out of control. That had provided opportunity to discuss mortality with the girls, but we could not have expected how soon we would face it.
