xkcd, I've tried that
Today's xkcd is almost familiar.
When dinner is ready and my daughters are engaged in flash games I've commanded the iMac to talk to them about coming to the table. I usually get annoyed glances.
On the other hand,
sudo shutdown -h now
is always effective, but even worse at accomplishing the long term goal.
